Class Description

‘Afaan Oromoo’ is an Afro-asiatic language belonging to the Cushitic branch. It is spoken predominantly by the Oromo people and neighboring ethnic groups in the Horn of Africa. About 85% of Oromo speakers live in Ethiopia, mainly in Oromia region. It is the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia. It is also the most widely spoken Cushitic language and the fourth-most widely spoken language of Africa, after Arabic, Hausa and Swahili. It is spoken as a first language by more than 40 million Oromo people in Ethiopia and by an additional more than half-million in parts of northern and eastern Kenya. It is also spoken by smaller numbers of emigrants in other African countries such as South Africa, Uganda, Libya, Egypt, Sudan and Tanzania. Besides first language speakers, significant members of other ethnicities who are in contact with the Oromo speak it as a second language, for instance, the Omotic-speaking Bambassi and the Nilo-Saharan-speaking Kwama in northwestern Oromia.

AOA L1 is an introduction level 1 Afaan Oromoo for Adults (age 14+). The 8-week class will enhance and expand students’ speaking, reading, writing and listening/understanding Afaan Oromoo. The course design will facilitate an interactive and productive learning atmosphere to ease students’ learning experience. After completing the class, students will strengthen their understanding of Qubee Afaan Oromoo, increase their knowledge of vocabulary and improve reading and writing skills.
