COALITION OF ETHIOPIAN ADVOCACY GROUPS COMMENDS PRESIDENT BIDEN’S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON ETHIOPIA AND URG FOR MORE ACTION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 22th, 2021

Communities from all over Ethiopia and its diverse diaspora are grateful to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and the Federal Government of the United States for hearing our calls and mobilization for sanctions on the Ethiopian government and urge for more. The ultimate objective of our people and those in the United States Government are aligned, and that is to bring an immediate end to all atrocities and state-organized violence in the landlocked country – particularly the horrific genocide and humanitarian blockade in Tigray, extrajudicial killing, mass arrests, ethnic cleansing in Oromia, Benishangul, and Gambella regions, plus Kemant and Agew ethnic groups. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. continuously leads with democracy and diplomacy. The United States of America, once again, returns to the global stage as the beacon of hope for many marginalized families around the world. These announced sanctions on the Ethiopian government alone will not bring peace and stability to the troubled nation, but it is a step in the right direction. Millions of people’s hopes have been revived, but more collective work is required.

We call on the Federal Government of the United States, United Nations Security Council, and all relevant entities to take appropriate actions in assuring 1) ceasefire — withdrawal of Eritrean, Amhara, SPLA, and other regional forces from Tigray, Oromia, Benishangul, Kemant and other areas of the country 2) protection of all civilians, refugees and unhindered humanitarian access to all conflict areas, especially Tigray region, 3) military and economic sanctions 4) independent investigations into human rights abuses, accountability for those responsible for war crimes and gender/sexual-based violence against women and children 5) freedom of all political prisoners and those targeted in ethnic arbitrary arrests 6) all-inclusive dialogue and reconciliation based on deference for the constitutional order and the rights of the nations, nationalities, and peoples of Ethiopia to exist.
