Throughout the month of June 2023, deadly campaigns by the Ethiopian government’s security forces, including the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF), the regional forces and Fanno extremist armed groups continued to be waged against the Oromo population.
The list below highlights the 49 Oromo civilians confirmed by OLLAA or through mass media reports as having been extrajudicially killed in June 2023, all at the hands of government forces, Fanno militia or, in one instance, regional security forces. It is important to note, however, that this list is an incomplete accounting of those killed extrajudicially in this past month as it does not include victims of mass murder, those whose names are unknown, or whose reported deaths OLLAA’s staff was unable to verify independently by the time of publication. It is likely that the true number of extrajudicial killings is much greater than the number reported below. The level of brutality is unabated this year. On the first day of June alone, 20 Oromo civilians in H/G Wallaga zone were murdered by Fanno forces; in the following weeks, 29 additional Oromo citizens were killed in widespread attacks throughout Oromia.

OLLAA urges the Ethiopian government to fulfill its duties under international law to protect its citizens and to launch independent investigations into these attacks as well as into all credible allegations of human rights violations against Oromo civilians. Furthermore, as the government forces continue to inflict violence on civilian populations with impunity, OLLAA appeals to the international community to take action, including by condemning these incidents and by launching independent investigations into these reports of human rights violations and injustices. In the name of peace and justice, we implore all parties to act swiftly.
