Extra-judicial killings of Gammadee Kateeloo

The late Gammadde Kateeloo had recently graduated from a University. He was unemployed and was looking for a casual job when he met his death. He was a resident of west Guji Zone, Bulee Horaa district Buudaa magaadaa sub-location.  According to a credible source who spoke to OLLAA on the phone, he was mercilessly executed by military personnel who were recently deployed to the area.

On that fateful day of 11th August 2023, Gammadee was cheerfully walking along the unnamed street within Fichawana town, looking for a casual job, when military personnel killed him on the spot. The reason for his extrajudicial execution remains unknown. Furthermore, the informer alleges that the military personnel still prevent members of the public from disposing of the deceased body.

Ethiopia National Law on Extrajudicial Killings

The right to life is the most fundamental right of an individual, without which no other rights can be upheld. The state agents should not violate the right to life without due process of the law. The arrested person should be brought to court to face their charges without worry of an unlawful execution in any area. The state has an obligation to promote and protect the right to life and prosecute the perpetrators.

The Right to life is enshrined in the Ethiopian Constitution by Article 15, which states that“Everyone has the right to life and no one shall be deprived his life except by reason of conviction in accordance with the law for a serious crime committed.”  The killing of the late Gammadee Katelloo is in violation of this article. We call on the Ethiopian government to stop the rampant extra-judicial killing throughout the country and bring perpetrators to justice.
