Geshere A. Gurmesa

Dr.Geshere Abdisa Gurmesa is Co-Director of Professional Education & Executive Director of ORSAS. He was born in Dire Inchinni, West Showa, Oromia. Dr. Geshere obtained bachelor’s degree in biology from Dilla University, Ethiopia in 2006, and a double master’s degree certificate in Sustainable Forest and Nature Management from University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Bangor University (UK) in 2010. His master’s degree is part of an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree; a jointly delivered by an international consortium of higher education institutions in Europe. Dr. Geshere obtained PhD in 2016 from University of Copenhagen, with a research focus on environmental science and climate change. During his career, he has worked at various positions and institutions including as assistant lecturer (Dilla University from 2006-2008), as research assistant (University of Copenhagen in 2010/11), and as a postdoctoral fellow at Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Science (2018-2020). Currently, Dr. Geshere is working a researcher at Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Science. Dr. has published several research papers. He has an intrinsic motivation for teaching and research. Outside his academic paths, he endeavors to contribute to the advancement of Oromo culture and to empower youths through education. He is the founder of Young Oromo Students and Academicians (YOSA); a Facebook created in 2010 that is dedicated to help Oromo students and researchers from sharing information about national and international scholarship and career opportunities to providing professional advice on application processes and online resources. Dr Geshere has written a short fiction book called ‘Himala Jireenyaa’, which presents stories surrounding his childhood life and high school education. He initiated the work to translate Facebook to Afan Oromo along with his colleagues.
