OLLAA 2023 Annual Report

OLLAA has published our 2023 Annual Report providing a compendium of all our publications over the past year, plus a foreword from OLLAA Executive Director, Seenaa Jimjimo.

“In 2018, a pivotal but costly period unfolded for the Oromo and Ethiopian communities, marking years of anticipation for change. Following peaceful protests against the oppressive ruling party, a power transition brought relief but also significant losses – over 5000 Oromo lives lost, many displaced, and numerous subjected to torture. Despite this toll, the Oromo community found resilience.

Optimism post-2018 was short-lived as violence erupted, with Amnesty International’s 2019 report detailing mass arrests, killings, and human rights violations. This was followed by the tragic killing of Hachalu Hundesa in 2020, a turning point for many Oromo.

In 2023, hope emerged as the Ethiopian government and Oromo Liberation Army engaged in a historic dialogue. Yet, disappointment followed when no agreement was reached. OLLAA diligently lobbied for dialogue but faced challenges reporting abuses by some associated with OLA. Disappointment grew as the international community overlooked the situation, and OLA failed to maintain momentum….”
