OLLAA CALLS FOR THE IMMEDIATE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES | Press Release (Nov. 27, 2020)

Falls Church, Virginia— In the past three weeks, a dangerous escalation of the conflict between the  Tigray regional forces and the Ethiopian national army has occurred. This escalation has been marked  by the deaths of thousands, the creation of tens of thousands of refugees, and the revocation of many  civil and political rights for those living within the Tigray region. Today, Prime Minister Abiy and his  government again refused offers from the international community to broker peace talks and committed  the government’s forces to an all-out offensive on the capital city of Tigray, Mek’ele — a city home to  half a million people. This action promises to further escalate the situation and endangers the lives of all  those living in Tigray’s most populous city.

OLLAA condemns these actions by the Ethiopian government and calls for the immediate cessation of  hostilities in the region and unrestricted humanitarian access.

Furthermore, OLLAA calls for Prime Minister Abiy to accept offers for neutral international arbitration  of the conflict and to allow the international community to conduct an independent investigation of any  alleged war crimes.

Lastly, OLLAA calls for humanitarian aid to be resumed and restrictions on communication in the  region to be lifted.

Oromo Legacy Leadership And Advocacy Association (OLLAA) has stood alongside with voiceless and faceless victims killed, falsely arrested, and forced into exile to become refugees at homes and abroad by the thousands. We believe the Oromo people, like others, deserve to be heard and to be understood for all the sacrifices they have paid and are still paying. Right now, we are truly disturbed by the daily news of human rights violations coming from Oromia!
