Report on Extrajudicial Killings in July 2022

July has been another bloody month for the people of Oromo, bringing further reports of extrajudicial killings and attacks against civilians to the region, as  government forces continue to target Oromo citizens, often alleging they are OLA supporters. The data collected below details individuals who were reported by the mass media as having been extrajudicially  killed by Ethiopian  government security forces in July throughout Oromia.

It should be noted that those individuals listed below are only those whose deaths have been made public through the media, and does not include mass executions or other incidents which have gone unreported, or in which the victims names are unknown. It seems likely that the true number of victims is much higher than the figures reported below, as many incidents of violence have gone unreported or underreported.  For example, during the month of July, the Ethiopian Peace Observatory recorded 32 separate attacks against civilians in Oromia. Of these attacks, 26 were perpetrated by Ethiopian security forces, leading to 68 reported fatalities, although the victims’ names were not reported by the EPO.

Reported Extrajudicial Executions in July 2022:

OLLAA continues to urge the Ethiopian government to fulfill its duties under international law by protecting its citizens and launching independent investigations into these attacks.  Furthermore, as the government forces continue to inflict violence on civilian populations with impunity, OLLAA continues to appeal to the international community to take action, including by condemning these incidents and by launching independent investigations into these reports of human rights violations and injustices.
